Ethan Schmidt is a far-right extremist who has become a polarizing figure in Arizona. He has a history of provocative videos and has been a vocal opponent of the gay rights movement. Schmidt reportedly promised to go to Target stores during Pride month and “hunt down LGBTQ supporters”. He has also posted videos of himself and other right-wing luminaries.
Schmidt was on law enforcement radar earlier this month after threatening to “hunt down” LGBTQ supporters inside Target stores. Police in Arizona arrested him after he failed to comply with a court order to stop harassing LGBTQ rights supporters. Schmidt was released on Sunday after being held overnight at a police station in Mesa.
Schmidt was born in South Lyon, Mich., and was the son of William and Karen Schmidt. He has an older sister, Elizabeth, and a younger brother, Samuel. He plans to major in art. The KU History Department established a fund in his honor to honor Schmidt. The History Department has set up a scholarship in his name through the KU Endowment.
As a freshman, he played for Xavier. He had two home runs and a grand slam during a 12-4 win over Miami (OH). His team won its conference championship and was named All-Central District and Mid-State League Ohio first team. He also earned two varsity letters in golf and basketball.
